Nelson Alarms is a family owned company with a history of putting customers first and consistently providing the best possible services and products.

The business began in 1979 as Peter Laing Electrical, an electrical contracting business. Peter Laing built his client base through solid relationships and a reputation of good workmanship and had a focus on training apprentices to grow the business.

In 1989, Peter and wife Sheryl planned a two year stay in Sheryl’s home town of Cairns, North Queensland. Peter employed an electrician he had trained himself to manage the business during this time.

Working in Australia for a very large electrical company exposed Peter to many large scale projects, which increased his experience and confidence in doing business at a greater scale.

Upon returning to New Zealand, Peter had an opportunity to purchase Bruce Rollo’s Security division, an existing security installation business based in Nelson.

From the experience he gained in the last two years, Peter had the confidence to take the risk and purchase the business. Peter decided to take the opportunity and “Nelson Alarms” was born.

2008 was another milestone year, with Peter’s eldest son Adrian joining the company as Business Manager. Adrian was returning from living in Wellington where he had completed a Business degree and spent two years working for a large corporate.

Adrian returned home with a mission to take Nelson Alarms to the next level, which meant focusing specifically on security services. Adrian took the helm and got to work building the team and working on the business.

Today, Nelson Alarms has more than 14 staff and is the leading security installation company in the Top of the South Region.

We support our team members and want them to succeed both at work and in life. We value honesty and integrity, and everyone pitches in to help out. At the end of the day, we recognise and reward great work because our people are obviously our greatest asset.


We also like to get involved with the local community through charity and sponsorships and community involvement.

One such community group is Neighbourhood Support Nelson. We share in a similar mission, that is to create safe and friendly neighbourhoods in our city. We work with them to achieve greater security for the community and are a proud sponsor of their work.

We also support many schools in Nelson, sponsoring school galas, fashion shows, science projects, and sports teams including the netball, mountain bike trials and road cycling teams.

Charities we support include the Cancer Society, Foundation for the Blind and the Heart Foundation.


We care for the environment and are more than happy doing our part to minimise our footprint.

For example, we reduce emissions by running modern vehicles and using GPS to reduce travel time.

We stock products that are environmentally friendly, which means they have excellent energy-saving features, are easier to recycle and dispose of, are long-lasting and do not contain harmful or prohibited chemicals.

And finally, we reduce, reuse and recycle as much waste as we possibly can, from the usual cardboard, paper and glass through to alloy, batteries and even polystyrene!
