For security you can trust

Frequently asked questions about alarm systems

What happens during a power cut?

All of our systems have battery back up to ensure your security is not compromised by power outages. Depending on the age and capacity of the battery, will determine how long it will provide power for your system in the event of a power outage.  The average life of a backup battery is around 3 years.  Our Technicians check the condition of your systems battery as a part of maintenance servicing which we recommend is completed annually.

What about false alarms?

False alarms are most often a result of product quality, poor installation and lack of maintenance. Nelson Alarms installers are trained to install your system correctly, further more, all of our systems comply with worldwide false alarm prevention standards, helping to minimise false alarms. Ask us about cross zoning and alarm verification, and pet immune motion detectors and regular servicing plans.

What happens if I accidentally set off my security system?

Simply enter your 4 digit code and the system will disarm. If you make a mistake simply press the # key and enter your code.  If your system is monitored you should advise your monitoring company.  All our systems are user friendly and fully explained by the Technician who installed it.  We also give you a straightforward user manual.

How long do I have on entry or exit once alarm is set?
Your alarm system is fully programable, so we can set entry and exit times to suit your site and requirements.

Who installs the alarms?

All installations are carried out by experienced and qualified Security Technicians. Each technician is individually and corporately Government licensed via the Justice Department on an annual basis. This guarantees a high standard of workmanship, and just to make sure, we will contact you after completion to check you are totally satisfied with the product and installation.

Will the alarm installers do an excellent job?

Our Technicians have years of experience installing alarms in every type of home or business. In general, all the cabling is hidden, normally in the ceiling space and down through the inside of the wall. Cables are run neatly through the ceiling space and clipped and stapled around areas where tradesmen are regularly crawling. The components are fitted perpendicular and in a balanced aesthetic way from room to room. The walls, ceilings and floors are left unmarked and clean.

Can I customise my alarm?

Yes.  We can customise your new alarm to meet your individual requirements.  Examples might be; siren run time, entry and exit time, extra entry time from garage, chime mode, partial arming, partitioning of alarm, night mode, alarm set indicator lights and many other features.

Wireless or hardwired sensors?

For most homes and businesses, the alarm system can be hardwired - and this is the preferred option because hardwired sensors do not need the batteries changed. However, if wiring is not possible, wireless sensors are the next best. Wireless equipment costs more than hardwired.

Can I add to my alarm

Yes.  Additional intruder detection and smoke detection devices, codepads, sirens, remote controls and many other features can be added to most systems.  Contact us to establish whether you have spare zones, expansion capability or if you would require an upgraded control panel.

Are remotes available on the security alarm?

Yes, you are able to add remotes to all our models of security systems. These are also able to incorporate the open and close function of the garage door.

Is there an assistance button?

There are assistance buttons on the keypad for Police, Medical and Fire. These are sometimes referred to as panic or medical buttons.  On the wireless remotes there is also a panic button.   You can also add a fixed panic button on the wall.

Can I have pets in the house and still use the alarm system?

Yes, if the alarm system is initially set up with pet friendly detectors. These detectors still detect movement from burglars but do not detect animals under a certain weight. Pet friendly detectors are typically more expensive than normal motion detectors but if you have animals it allows them to roam free throughout the premises.   Otherwise, if you have animals you must make sure that all pets are relegated to a portion of premises that have no motion detectors or the areas that pets roam freely must be "bypassed" out of the alarm system before it is armed.

I have an existing unmonitored Alarm System. Can this be changed to a monitored alarm system?

Yes, most systems can be changed from unmonitored to a monitored system.  Click to find out more about Nelson Alarms Monitoring.
